What is differential feed, and why do I need it?
- Differential feed controls the rate at which the fabric is fed through the machine.
- Usually the adjustment is via a simple dial or lever with a short range of movement.
- There is two feed dogs that together move the materials under the presser foot. The differential is the different ratio between both the feed dogs.
- It prevents fabrics from stretching or puckering while sewing.
- For stretchy fabrics like knits, the differential feed prevents rippling.
