How often should I change the needle on my overlocker?

Overlocker needles need to be sharp, must not have any burrs or be bent, this could cause thread breakage or tangling, skipping stitches and thread balance problems.

  • You should change the needle on your overlocker regularly, especially after heavy use or when switching between different fabric types. Dull needles can cause skipped stitches or damage the fabric.
  • We generally recommended to change the needle every 6 hours of sewing or whenever the fabric type changes E.G, switching from lightweight to heavyweight fabrics.
  • Something to consider, a polyester based fabric will wear the needle point more than a cotton.
  • Listen for a faint click-click-click noise as the needle penetrates the fabric, this is an indication that the needle point has a burr and needs to be replaced.
  • Use the recommended needle type as per your manual, or it may be printed on the side cover. The needle size will most lightly be 15x1, HAx1, or ELx705 types. If you have any doubt about the needles type you require, please contact us, we will be able to help.
  • Using the correct needles will prevent thread breakage or tangling, skipping stitches, tension issues, and even machine locking up.
